An objective perspective of male constructs and female responses: the female's representation in Eugene O'Neill's late plays

Through an analysis of two female protagonists in Eugene O'Neill's late classical plays Long Day's Journey into Night and The Moon for the Misbegotten from the perspective of gender studies, this essay is to elaborate the way that, in his portraits of female characters, O'Neill represents different responses of female characters in the male constructs, presents their plight, agony and frustration to the audience, and reveals their hard situation as both victims and sacrifices of the patriarchal society.
