Irish immigrants played a key role in the growth of American Catholicism, which has been formed into a denomination that bears influence only second to Protestantism in social and political life since the 19th century. This process mainly focused on the inculturation reform of European Catholicism that aimed at the adaption of new cultural environment. A highly Americanized cultural system was then established as the basis of further development of American Catholicism.
