Implications of Attribution Theory in Mathematics Education

In this paper, the author first introduces the attribution theory in social psychology and discusses its implications in mathematics education based on the application of this theory in the author's teaching practice. As a teacher, he or she must understand why students fail in their study and then help them to develop confidence about their ability, enabling students to enjoy their success due to their efforts. Teachers should also make efforts to reach a balance between the extent of difficulty in students' homework and the time available for them, as well as to convince their students about the value of their accomplishment. Finally, teachers should give students their feedback on their studies frequently and evaluate their progress from time to time.
