为山西农业做出贡献的美国友人——穆懿尔

1921年,穆懿尓作为美国欧柏林学院的志愿者,来到铭贤学校任英语和体育教师。任教期间,与师生建立了深厚的友谊。课余时间他与师生经常到学校附近的农村郊游,对山西的农村、农业、农民有了一定的了解。1923年返回欧柏林学院后,他本着发扬欧柏林精神的宗旨,向学院提出申请,自愿再次返回山西,为山西农业服务。但他提出一个要求,请学院资助他完成农科研究生课程学习。经过反复磋商,学院同意了他的申请。1927年夏,他获得康乃尔大学农学硕士学位后,与新婚妻子来到中国。在北平经过一年的汉语学习,于1928年秋,再次来到铭贤学校。铭贤学校成立农科,并购置土地,招聘人员,开展农业科技研究与推广。穆懿尔先后引进了“金皇后”玉米、软布来绵羊、甜菜、苹果等动植物品种,进行驯化、杂交,然后推广,为山西农业做出了突出贡献。

Raymnod T.Moyer:the American friend who has made tremendous contribution to Shanxi agriculture

As a volunteer of Oberlin College,Ohio,Raymnod T.Moyer came to Oberlin Shanxi Memorial School as an English and gym teacher in 1921.He developed friendship with other teachers and students during his stay in Shanxi.He went to the countryside near the school with other teachers and students after school hours,which helped him understand on Shanxi’s coun?tryside,agriculture and farmers.After returning to Oberlin College in 1923,in the spirit of Oberlin,Moyer applied again to be a volunteer to return to Shanxi to serve in the agriculture.Meanwhile,he proposed the college to subsidize him for postgraduate courses in agriculture.After repeated consultations,the college approved his application.He earned his master's degree in agri?culture from Cornell University in the summer of 1927,and then he came to China with his newly?married wife.They learned Chinese in Beijing for a year and returned to Oberlin Shanxi Memorial School in the autumn of 1928.Later,the agricultural de?partment was established,land was acquired and staff were recruited in order to develop agricultural science and technology re?search and extension in Oberlin Shanxi Memorial School.Moyer introduced“Golden Queen”sweet corns,Rambouillet sheep,beets,apples and other animal and plant varieties,and domesticated,hybridized and promoted later,which has been great contri?bution to Shanxi agriculture.
