This article first gives a brief introduction to the background of the early cultural exchange between China and Japan with the attempt to understand the cultural origins between the two nations. Then it expounds Japan's studies on The Songs of Chu before and at the beginning of 20th century. Although Japan's earlystudies on The Songs of Chu then were still in the primary stage and the achievement was not significant enough, we are already able to get a glimpse of their general style and features that can be used by Chinese scholars as reference.
