| 摘 要： | 文章运用T.S艾略特的文学史观对《坎特伯雷故事集》中的修女院院长及其故事与《红字》进行比较研究,讨论了乔叟与霍桑在A字的蕴含义、人物塑造及主题表达方面的相似性,揭示了后者对前者的借鉴以及传统的伟大力量,同时也指出了由于所处的时代和国度的不同,二者也表现了很强的本土特点。

| Abstract: | The paper applies T.S.Eliot's view of literary history to the comparative analysis of the Prioress and her tale in The Canterbury Tales and the Scarlet Letter,focusing on the similarities in the connotation of the Letter A,in characterization,and in the subject matter,so as to reveal Hawthorne's learning from Chaucer,and the power of literary tradition.And at the same time their different native elements are also mentioned because of the different age and country they lived in. |
