In the years from 1950 to 1970,U.S. federal government dramatically expanded its defense spending which led to the rapid growth of economic development in American South. Up to 1970, the South region transformed dramatically that enabled the South to catch up or even to overpass the Northeast and Midwest regions in the 1980s as the most vigorous areas of economic development. This process has demonstrated that under the market economic system the federal government, with its distinctive policies and economic functions, was not only able to regulate the problem of unbalanced regional development but also to play a dominant role in the rise of underdeveloped areas.
