The Unmarked Rhetorical Mood and the Punctuation of Ancient Chinese Prose

It can be often seen that some rhetori cal sentences without marks of rhetorical mood are punctuated as declarative sen tences, which set, therefore, obstructions to the correct comprehension of the p rose. This paper points out some errors of this kind with concrete examples and accounts so that much attention should be paid to the unmarked rhetorical mood, for it has great weight in punctuating the ancient Chinese prose correctly.
