Taiwans New Deal modernization drive started from 1874 and ended in 1895 when the island was handed to Japan in the cession. During the 20 years, great change s took place in Taiwans military defense, in political outlook, and in economi c construction. Compared to the modernization drive carried on in mainland provi nces, its striking features were: a late start but quick efficiency, whose reaso ns were: concerns by Qing Dynasty; endeavors by commissioners on end; and suppor ts from important officials from mainland and assistance from Taiwan esquires. T aiwans modernization drive had established a stable basis form its later moder nization developments.
