In the Eighth Year of Shunzhi,Hou Fangyu took the Triennial Provincial Civil Service Examination for the Degree of Juren which aroused great interest in the academic circles.However,an agreement has so far not been reached on whether he took the examination from his own accord or under compulsion.Judging from Hou's mental attitude in his later years,it can be seen that although he had to make a painful choice between assuming an official post in favor of the Qing Dynasty or withdrawing from public life for the Ming Dynasty,he finally decided to choose the former instead of the latter.Therefore,a conclusion can be drawn that Hou took the Provincial Examination just from his own accord rather than forced.
