“现代”中国文学史——读钱基博《现代中国文学史》

与后来的文学史以建构科学客观的知识学为目的不同，钱基博以传统子、史精神“撰著”《现代中国文学史》，将王阁运、章太炎、康有为、陈三立、严复、王国维、梁启超、胡适等并置一起，讨论他们如何以各自的理论见解和创作实践共同参与和见证“现代”这一“事件”。梁启超、胡适倡导“革命”，追求文学日新叉新的“现代”；章太炎则代表着第二种“现代”人物类型，身预追新求变的“现代”潮流，却自始即长虑却顾，意识到必将随新变而来的种种流弊；《现代中国文学史》着墨最多也是人数最多的是第三类人物，康有为、陈三立、严复、王国维、章士钊等人包括著者钱基博自己，他们始则舍旧谋新惟恐不力，晚则痛加追悔。一部《现代中国文学史》堪称三类“现代”文人之“忏悔录”。

A History of "Modern" Chinese Literature:A Reading Note on Qian-Jibo's A History of Modern Chinese Literature

Different from those literary historians whose program is to constmct a scientific and objective system of literary knowledge, Qian - Jibo composed A History of Modern Chinese Literature in the spirit of Chinese traditional philosophers and historians. He regarded ＂Modem＂ as an ＂event＂ and considered that many writers, such as Wang - Kaiyun, Zhang - Taiyan, Kang - Youwei, Chen - Sanli, Yan- Fu, Wang - Guowei, Liang - Qichao and Hu - Shi, all involved and witnessed this ＂event＂ by means of their theories and creations. Qian - Jibo divided these writers into three groups. Liang- Qichao and Hu -Shi who belonged to the first group proposed ＂Literature Revolution＂ and pursued the ＂Modern＂ changing with each -Taiyan adapted himself to ＂Modern＂ trends while he also Kang - Youwei, Chen - Sanli, Yan- Fu, Wang - Guowei, passing day. As a member of the second group, Zhang realized the corrupt practices along with these trends. Zhang - Shizhao and Qian - Jibo himself all belonged to the third group. These writers sought ＂Modern＂ exceedingly in the beginning, but regretted their past pursuits at the last. A History of Modem Chinese Literature may be rated as a repentant record of these ＂Modem＂ writers.
