Locke and the Basic Problem of Early Modern Epistemological Philosophy

In Locke''s philosophy, the basic problem of early modern epistemological philosophy is the issue of the representative nature of ideas. It aims to solve the question whether Locke''s ideas are the objects of perception or the acts of perception. The point at issue concerns whether Locke''s ideas are veil-of-perception, and whether Locke''s ideas are tertium quid which the mind cannot go beyond? The relevant discussions by scholars reveal that this issue can be further divided at two levels: the first level is whether Locke''s ideas are real objects? The second level is that if Locke''s ideas are not the real objects, whether Locke is a representative realist? The basic problem of early modern epistemological philosophy is still a focal issue in the contemporary study of Locke''s philosophy.
