| Abstract: | Use of numerals is a common phenomenon in the Chinese language. But research on this phenomenon has been quite rare so far. In actual use, numerals acquire grammatical meaning, rhetorical meaning and cultural meaning besides carrying numeric concept. But changes often occur to these meanings with the development of the Chinese language. This paper is an attempt to study the differences in meanings of numerals in the archaic Chinese and the modern Chinese for the purpose of helping people better understand and use the numerals. |
