A Critique of the Studies of Ironic Cues

This paper,focused on the function and types of ironic cues,summarizes and discusses previous studies of ironic cues.It is pointed out that ironic cues do play an alerting and facilitating role in the comprehension of irony,if they are combined with other contextual sources manifesting the speaker's ironic intent. The study of what constitute ironic cues can function as a guide for the empirical study of ironic utterances of a particular language data,and naturally the research result can pave way for the cross-cultural studies of ironic utterances.
