The Chuangzao Weekly and Modern Literary Criticism

The Chuangzao Weekly, a literary periodical devoted largely to literary criticism and translation, started its publication driven by the "fighting" motive of the Chuangzao Society and the profit-making attempt of the publisher. The Chuangzao Society took The Chuangzao Weekly as its base to provoke criticism on the Neo-literature and to develop critical style. Through their own critical practice, those critics of The Chuangzao Weekly pointed out the malpractices of the Neo-literature in its development and spotlighted its succession and excess of the May-4th literary tradition based on its literary view of "self-expression", which helped accomplish a significant aesthetic transition of the Neo-literature. Moreover, they consciously and systematically developed a scientific critical style and established a theoretical system that is close to be scientific and perfect, thus accelerating the development of the modernity of literary criticism. Their deep anxiety and fierce criticism over the Neo-literature, their admirable courage and great accomplishments, made The Chuangzao Weekly an unnegligible contributor in the history of modern literary criticism.
