中国当代文学在新中国成立后至“文革”前期间虽被从属于政治，但也诞生了不少蕴有“大精神”的作品。历史新时期的作品更多地蕴有了“大精神”，铸就了中国当代文学的十年辉煌。后新时期文学相当严重地失却了这种“大精神”，主要表现在：理想主义式微，英雄主义不再；作品缺乏原创性和思想深度；作家从人类灵魂的工程师异化为脑力劳动者和智本家。当下只有张炜、张承志等致力于史诗创作、真正地将创作与整个民族命运自觉地相关联的少数“孤胆英雄”支撑着中国当代文学的天空。
