20世纪80年代以来,与中国史学发展的变化同步,美国中国学界不少专门从事中国乡村研究的学者开始转向中国的城市,韩书瑞是其中一位代表人物。她的《北京的寺庙与城市生活,1400～1900》通过对以寺庙为中心的宗教信仰活动的分析讨论明清北京城内与城外、上层与下层、外地与本地以及不同种族的居民逐渐融合、形成城市认同的过程,显示了她研究北京城市生活的独特视角。

1400～1900,The City Life of Beijing During Five Hundred Years

Since 1980's,while great changes happened in the field of Chinese history,a group of American historians specialized in the studies of Chinese countryside and began to turn their attention into Chinese cities,Susan Naquin is one of them.Her book,Peking: Temples and City Life,1400 ～ 1900,stressed on many aspect of urban life with many creative opinions.The book is a landmark for both the study of Beijing's history and Chinese urban history.In the terms of social and cultural history,the highlight of Naquin's analysis is the process of the syncretization of the inner and outer city,the upper and lower social classes,immigrations and natives,Han and Manchurians during the communal activities around temples,from which the identity of a capital came into being.Her book showed her special angle of research on the life of Beijing city.
