Questions from Spirit Suicide——A Comparison between the two novels, Material life and Kaleidoscope

The two novels,Material life and Kaleidoscope,were both published in the first issue of the two magazines,Harvest and Contemporary,in 2001.The former focuses on the subversive impact of market economy on the poet and the latter reveals the embarrassment of the intellectuals entangled in the trap of officialdom.The two heroes can not stand the pain of survival and struggle so that they abandon their spiritual faith,for some other ideal hope,to strive in the secular world and finally become greatly successful.However,spiritually lost,they are both tortured by a sense of psychic emptiness and thus find life meaningless.Then the questions come:how these people choose their fate? What can be done to save their souls?
