Yang's comedic style was shaped by the comedic feature of the city itself: The un-thorough modernization of Shanghai, as well as the incomplete citizenship of Shanghainese, plays a crucial role in the thematic treatment, characterization and comedic structuring of Yang's comedies. Meanwhile, Yang's comedies also showed an active attempt at clearing up the gaps and conflicts. These interactions make Yang's comedies masterpieces of custom comedies in the history of the Chinese contemporary drama.
