A Study on Chinese and English Phatic Communion from the Perspective of Cultural Psychology

Phatic communion is intended to create an atmosphere and maintain a comfortable social relationship between people without involving any factual exchange of information and comments. It transfers little information but exists pervasively in people＇s daily life as the lubricant of interpersonal communication. The forms of Chinese and English phatic communion are closely associated with their respective cultural psychology at a deep level. This article probes into the differences in Chinese and English phatic communion from the perspective of four aspects in cultural psychology, namely, values, modes of thinking, aesthetic tastes and ethics, to illustrate the great impacts of culture on its language.
