Essence of Language and Relationship between Language and Writing--A Discussion with Pan Wenguo

Saussure's theoretical principles of the essence of language and the relationship between language and writing are not outmoded. The study of the characteristics of Chinese language and written characters and its theoretical renewal will not be possible if deviating from the basic principles of general. Thus, Saussure's theory should be better comprehended to prevent misreading and misunderstanding. As to the epistemology and methodology of the study, it is critical to be well grounded on language rather than on written characters, and to take morpheme as a basic unit of language articulation so that no binary coding mechanism of asynchronous sounds and semantic meaning can be found.
