A Cognitive-Pragmatic Approach to Irony Understanding

Relevance theory （RT） interprets verbal communication from different perspectives and proposes an analysis framework of irony, but the framework has its own limitations while illustrating irony. Its limitations can be complemented by stereotypical relation （SR） of Implicatives Stereotypical Reasoning Model （Implicatives SRea Model）. The complementarities between RT and Implicatives SRea Model make it possib irony within RT. SR makes the interpretive relation in the analysis framework le to extend the analysis framework of of irony within RT more relevant and specific. Contrast is the inherent feature of irony, and identification of contrast is the key to irony understanding.
