In modern times, the majority of Hainanese started to work in Southeast Asia as contracted workers in the plantations and mines and they endured all kinds of hardships and made great contribution for the economic development and social progress there. Meanwhile, they also inherited the predecessors' tradition of going into business and began to shift towards the commercial departments and service trades. After the mid of 1910s, influenced by the historical background, cultural tradition, educational level, economic position and the rules of the migrant society, the speed of their occupation shifting was quickened and gradually formed the occupation type that had strong regional color. Their economic activities have brought about active influence to the economic development in both the local region and their hometown.
