The Influence of Illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley on the Novels and Illustrations of Shanghai Style

Aubrey Beardsley’s illustrations had a strong touch of sex,which influenced the novels of Shanghai Style both positively and negatively.On the hand,writers of Shanghai Style hold an open attitude toward sex;on the other hand,some writers indulged themselves in gastronomy at the end of the century and lost seriousness and ideology in their creation.Beardsley’s illustrations were well-known for eccentric distortion and exaggeration,and this style was embodied in part of Shanghai Style writers.Less influence of Beardsley’s illustrations was seen on the illustrations of Shanghai Style;the most influenced one was Ye Lingfeng.
