METAPHOR AND SIMILE IN MY EYE

A simile is an explicit comparison.A metaphor makes implicit the comparison which is made explicit in simile.But a metaphor is not an equal figurative d evice and differs only in that one is c overt comparison and the other,overt.In fact,they have many differences,the most obvious being that when a metaphor is converted int o a simile,much force is lost.We tran sform a metaphor into a simile comparison only when we want to find a plausible ground for an auth or to produce it.For,the simile comp arison is,a basis from which the producer of a metaphor starts and through which we are to understand a metaphor.Metaphor is a higher f orm of simile comparison.It is more startling,mo re concise,more immediate,more fac ilitated,more subtle and it is a stro nger claim.
