Linguists have always been concerned about adjectives for its ambiguity and changeableness in meaning .The article intends to interpret pragmatic contraction and extension of adjectives by means of Relevance Theory in hope of achieving unani -mous explanation for meaning change of adjectives .The interpreters follow the easiest cognitive route to explore the optimal rel-evance with adjustment of context information , ostensive information , encyclopedia information and so on .The interpreters stop his pragmatic inference once they gain the optimal relevance , the byproduct of which is pragmatic contraction and exten-sion.
