A Cognitive and Pragmatic Interpretation of the Semantic Change of Vision Verb SEE

Grammaticalization is a very important way in studying semantic change from the perspective of pragmatics and cognition. It proposes that semantic change follows the unidirectional law of going from the concrete to the abstract and from the major categories to minor ones while the word would gain more and more subjectivity. The semantic change of the vision verb SEE, motivated by pragmatic inference and through the mechanisms such as metonymy, reanalysis and subjectification, is a process of semantic bleaching during which the verb accumulates more and more subjectivity, which highlights the characteristics of grammaticalization. Besides, the inner mechanisms and characteristics of the word's semantic change vary from one phase to another in the emergence of its new meanings.
