Mutual Complementarity of Relevance and Theme- Rheme Theory in Discourse Understanding

Theme-rheme theory reflects the characteristics and universal rules of human thinking.It plays an important role in the development and coherence of a discourse.A discourse's coherence dose not rely on the formal coherence of themes that occupy the initial position in clauses,but relies on sensible distribution and connections of information contained in themes and rhemes under the guidance of the principle of relevance.Theme is taken as the starting point of thinking and is then unfolded to form a complete discourse in accordance with the principle of relevance.This paper analyzes the interaction of relevance principle and theme-rheme theory to achieve a better understanding in the process of discourse comprehension.
