Abstract: | There is a need to examine social work theory and practice across Europe. An exploration of issues related to child adoption in Britain and Finland illuminates the differing social and professional contexts in which social workers and associated professionals must operate. Key factors include, to differing degrees, the decline in the number of children 'available' for adoption and the issue of parental consent to adoption; how adoption has tended to become more 'open' in recent years; questions related to 'race' and ethnicity; and the specific situation of children in public care. |
