Competing Motivations' Influence on Word Order Flexibility: Analysis of Hawkins' "Heaviness Serialization Principle" and "Mobility Principle"

A viewpoint prevalent in general linguistics is that the more morphological forms a language has,the freer its word order can be. The weakness of this viewpoint is obvious from a typological angle,however.The paper discusses "mobility principle" and "heaviness serialization principle",two competing motivations raised by Hawkins,and concludes that the performance of competing motivations is an important factor of influencing word order flexibility,which may be summarized as the "performing principle of competing motivations of word order".
