| Abstract: | The paper illustrates that in the Chinese classic novel Liaozhaizhiyi, characterization tends to be sexually inverted. In this legendary novel, young men resemble women in their portrait, manner and temperament, and vice versa. It argues that such an inversion is closely related to the esthetic norms of the day and the author's mock feminine mentality, as well as strong influence from the legendaries from the Tang dynasty. |
