The Color and Lustre of the Pearl

The Calcium Carbonate,which is the basis of all pearls and shell matter, is found in the form of mineral aragonite and associated with an organic substance known as conchiolin to form complex compounds.The appealling iridescence and the lustre of the pearls are due primarily to the reflection and refraction of light on the surface of the transluscent gem. From these,it is practicable to cultivate pearls which have desired colors and lustres by controlling the composition of the water chemically and biologically,choosing proper mother-of-pearl beads and inserting them into the certainpparts of the mollusks.
