A Review on the Evolution of Chinese Southeastern Society and Shanghai Small Sword Party Uprising

The characteristics of Shanghai Small Sword Party, which were different from those of traditional secret societies, were all originated from the evolution of Chinese southeastern society. The five ports trading with all countries resulted in bankruptcy of traditional agriculture and handicraft industry because of the direct attack of foreign goods. One branch of Heaven-and-earth Society, a traditional secret society, came to Shanghai by following the immigrants, and became a key factor in Shanghai Small Sword Party uprising. The commercial situation at that time made the Small Sword Party attach importance to trading, while a "foreigners" situation forced the Small Sword Party to face complicated diplomatic relations.
