论司马迁、班固文学思想的同异

On Similarities and Differences between the Literary Ideas of Sima Qian and Ban Gu

It is of significance to compare the literary ideas of Sigma Qian and Ban Gu.They both emphasized on reflecting realities,praising the good and criticizing the evil.They pursued the ideal of vividly portraying characters and splendidly narrating stories.Both of them agreed that literature derives from life and should serve politics.Thus they approved Qu Yuans works and Ci Fu of Han Dynasty.Their historiographies applied the biographic device of "Portraying a person by his literary works" and the critique rule of "Understanding ones work by referring to his time and life background".They shared the commonplace of authentic recording of history.Their differences lied in writing inclination,understanding of the sources of literature,key points of praising and criticizing theory,critiques of Qu Yuans works and The Record of History.The reason of these differences is due to the various cultural conditions and general moods of their times as well as their personal ideological differences.
