On Cicero's Definition of "State" and its Basic Traits

To define "state" has been a focus of studies by different statesmen in different times. Marcus Tullius Cicero is one of the representatives of the classical political philosophy of the West. An interpretation of the definition of "state" by Cicero reveals that his definition of "state" is not an inheritance of any Greek model but his own idea which has three traits, that is, the people as the foundation; justice as the principle; legality as the essence.
