On The Catcher in the Rye and American Picaresque Novel

J.D.Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, one of the greatest American pi caresque novels, had a great influence upon the young people during the 1950s an d early 1960s. This paper intends to analyze the characteristics of the America n picaresque novel from the viewpoint of The Catcher in the Rye: the typical ized hero, three characteristics of the artistic form, satirical purpose, and anti-e stablishment attitudes. In the meantime, through revealing the uniqueness of Th e Catcher in the Rye from its major character, the setting, the end, and the i nf luence, the author points out Salinger obeys, as well as transcends the traditio nal picaresque novel in creating his The Catcher in the Rye.
