Yangliuqing,a town with more than a 1,000-year history,and which lies in the western suburb of Tianjin Municipality(in North China),is renowned for gaily colored woodcut New Year's paintings.The paintings embody the town's distinct cultural features,and especially its rich historical and cultural messages.Therefore,experts of Chinese folklore refer to the paintings asliving fossils of historyand anencyclopedia of folk arts and customs.In 2006,China added the craft to the list of the country's items of intangible cultural heritage.
