It is meaningful only from its context. The purpose of understanding a word is to use it. The ability to understand a word, or to comprehend an object, is the ability you deal with it in the field of meanings. The process of understanding is a process of translation. Since understanding is a problem of fitness of experience, it is a progressive process, which means there will always exist a better, ever improving understanding.
