New challenges for medical directors

Much of the future success of managed care organizations will depend on the quality of the direction provided by medical directors. The increasing complexity of the health care industry, manifested by intense competition for patients and reduced levels of reimbursement, will necessitate that HMOs, PPOs, IPAs, and utilization review firms begin to differentiate their services according to clinical protocols and outcome measures.
