马克思的社会发展理论是马克思主义的重要组成部分。其关于以生产力发展为基础，推进社会全面协调发展的观点；关于各国、各民族都必须对外开放，在互相学习与借鉴中求得发展的观点；关于重视人的自由全面发展的观点；关于在经济社会的发展中，正确处理人与自然的关系的观点，对于我国西部民族地区经济社会发展具有重要的指导意义。在西部大开发过程中，民族地区的社会发展必须始终坚持马克思社会发展理论的指导。
