中国历史是指发生于中国土地上的历史,具有丰富的区域性内涵,不仅各地区的社会经济与政治文化的发展有早晚、快慢之分,道路有顺直与曲折之不同,发展水平有高、低之异,不同区域所走过的历史道路也可能会有根本性的不同,从而形成不同的发展模式。在中国历史上,存在着中原道路、南方道路、草原道路、高原道路与沙漠一绿洲道路等五条基本的区域性历史发展道路,其社会经济形态、国家形态及其形成演变过程、族群与文化特质诸方面均表现出根本性差别。中国历史发展道路的区域性差异,根源于各地区生存环境的差别、生存于其间的各种人群的不同,以及不同的人群对其所处环境及其变化的适应与应对采取了不同的策略与方式。
