Aynur and Her Choices:a Young Moslem Uyghur Woman Faces the Future

The choices faced by young Uyghur women, choices that are different from those faced by women in the rest of China. . Here, with a look at a single young Moslem woman, we see the options available, the choices she makes, and the problems and solutions that these choices present. As Aynur identifies with her culture as Uyghur and Moslem, a part of this cultural identity restricts her opportunities as a Chinese citizen. Despite this, there are institutions available to overcome the barriers to women, and these are the ones investigated. Education and employment opportunities themselves are the vehicles for group integration, and efforts are facilitated even by women who are strong ethnic identifiers. The essay also deals with institutions such as schools of ethnic studies, the college competitive exam (the gaokao) and the problems of large families with limited financial resources. Drawing from the ideas of Lila Abu-Lughod on women in Central Asia, an approach based on the Anthropological writings on cultural relativism serve as an important guideline in understanding the choices of young Uyghur women and the context in which they are made.
