马克思、恩格斯认为，平等是一个历史的概念，反映的是一定社会形态下的经济关系，而不仅仅是法学或道德范畴；平等受一定的生产力和经济文化发展水平的制约，其实现是一个自然的历史过程。社会主义初级阶段的平等和公平，是与现有的生产力发展水平和经济结构相适应的，在实现的程度上还不能达到马克思主义经典作家所设想的完整形态的社会主义公平的发展水平。
