Origin of screen painting in Mogao Grotto--a comparison with screen painting in tombs of the Tang Dynasty

The screen painting in Mogao Grotto originated from the box-like niches in the prosperous period of Tang Dynasty and was an imitation of the Buddhist temple. It could not be a coincidence that the screen painting in Mogao Grotto is similar to the screen painting in tombs of the early period of Tang Dynasty in both composition and subject matters. This paper holds that the design of screen painting in Mogao Grotto was inspired by the Buddhist temple and also by the royal residence. A recognition of the relationship between them will help us to understand the origin of the screen painting in Mogao Grotto.
