Chinese attach importance to silence in the conversation,with the idea of "the very quietness goes before sound".However,in the eyes of Americans,silence indicates the lack of self-confidence.So the paper attempts to analyze the causes of the communication obstacles from the perspective of Chinese and American rhetorical and philosophical conflicts to make the students achieve the real benefits from the intercultural communication.
