Compounds, whose formation is one of the most important means to create new words, are very productive in the English language. It can be observed that these words are both extensively and popularly employed in recent years' English newspapers, magazines and literary works. This linguistic phenomenon has aroused an increasing attention and interest among linguists and language users as well. English compound nouns and adjectives occupy a large proportion in the sum of compounds. It is therefore worthwhile to study them. The aim of the discussion of these two kinds of commpounding words is to provide readers with knowledge of the external structures of compounds and then to develop their perception of the internal grammatical relationships and their insight into the meaning of there words.
