Social Changes in Hangzhou after Revolution of 1911

The recovering of Hangzhou during the Revolution of 1911 brought a new look to the city. The military government established by the revolutionaries made great efforts to facilitate the development of the city： the urban districts were re-planned for the sake of political stability; a series of economic measures were taken, which paved the way for the economic prosperity of the city later; importance was attached to the development of culture and education, which proved indispensable to the growth of Hangzhou into a city of reputa- tion and taste, and social customs underwent a lot of changes, which gave the old city a new look of vigor and verve. All these changes, thanks to the Revolution, brought Hangzhou a significantly new social outlook, and a probe into the whole process may help people of today to understand the modernization of the city throughout the last century.
