Analysis of Black Manhood in The Gathering of the Old Men

Racial prejudice has always been a serious social problem in America. In the long history of white-black conflict, the form of discrimination may vary, but the goal remains the same： to oppress and suppress the balck people. In all his novels, African American writer, Ernest Gaines is dedicated to presenting the world the genuine history of the Black. In the novel The Gathering of the Old Men, he gave an account of how a group of black men struggled to reconstruct their manhood. The author of the thesis tried to analyze how Gaines achieved the reconstruction of manhood of African Americans and reaches the conclusion that the black men must overcome the ＂double consciousness＂, and shoulder the community responsibilities in order that their manhood can be reconstructed.
