印度裔英国作家维维.苏.奈保尔和维克拉姆.赛思的小说都通过兼具被殖民者身份的都市闲逛者的视角,展示了城市浓厚的后殖民色彩,其市容市貌和城市居民的生活、思想仍然有殖民主义留下的不可磨灭的痕迹。在后殖民时期,曾经的被殖民者向往城市、向城市流动的倾向,是殖民者宣扬西方先进文明的结果。但是,由于种族主义造成的他者和模仿人的身份,被殖民者在城市里更容易失却身份认同和文化归属感。

V.S.Naipaul and Vikram Seth are both English writers of Indian ancestry.Both Naipaul's One out of Many and Seth's A Suitable Boy reveal the strong postcolonial flavour of city.In the perspective of colonized flaneur,colonialism leaves an indelible mark on the appearance of city and the life and consciousness of city dwellers in the postcolonial period.That the former colonized subjects yearn for city life and flow into city is the result of propaganda of advanced Western civilization by the former colonizers.However,due to their being the other and the mimic caused by racialism,the colonized are more likely to lose their identity and cultural belongingness in a city.
