On Leo Strauss's Political Philosophy and His Doctrine of Esotericism

The doctrine of esotericism/exotericism expresses the peculiar nature of Leo Strauss's political philosophy. According to this doctrine, there is an insurmountable conflict between philosophy as such and society as such, and consequently philosophical writings have to adopt the art of esotericism/exotericism. In view of the awkward situation of political philosophy in contemporary society, Strauss attempts to restore the classical idea of civilization by appealing to classical political philosophy. That idea does not have any illusion about human politics, nor is it satisfied with the idea that human beings cannot escape the political cave. And hence that idea of civilization emphasizes the importance of philosophizing, which reminds human beings of the imperfectness of human politics.
